The 2021 Hyundai Palisade and the 2021 Honda Pilot have plenty of space for people and cargo. Here is how they compare.
2021 Hyundai Palissade
Above average: Mid-size crossover for up to 8 people; spacious interior; many standard features; beautiful.
Below average: Wind noise at higher speeds; the door pockets are a bit stingy.
Consensus: The 2021 Hyundai Palisade is a three-row mid-size SUV that seats eight or seven that combines luxury and comfort in a contemporary-looking package.
Honda Pilot 2021
Above average: Seats up to eight; standard V6 engine; solid resale value.
Below average: Not very engaging to drive; sober style.
Consensus: The 2021 Honda Pilot is a roomy and comfortable 3-row SUV from a trusted brand and has been a segment favorite for three generations.
Palisade versus Pilot: Space stations
The Palisade 2021 comes with a full feature set that compares it to other vehicles in the mid-size SUV space like the Honda Pilot, Volkswagen Atlas and its corporate sibling, the Kia Telluride. It comes with a 3.8-liter V6 engine that develops 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to blend comfortably on fast highways. While we did notice some wind noise at higher speeds, the Palisade is comfortable and quiet on the road with ample cabin space for passengers and their cargo.
The third row seats provide enough space for an adult to sit comfortably. The second row slides out at the push of a button so passengers can climb into the back without having to do gymnastics. The rear bench is also motorized, so if you need more cargo space, you can stow the seats away quickly without having to fight with them. In models equipped with second-row captain’s seats, the number of passengers drops to seven. The interior of the fence is full of quality materials that give it a sense of luxury. The interior is functional and offers tons of storage nooks and crannies, including an innovative area under the center console. It also comes at its base with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless. Around town, the Palisade gets 19 mpg.
The Honda Pilot seats seven or eight people in three rows, with the second row captain’s seats limited to the top trims. The passenger compartment is spacious, and cargo space ranges from 16.5 cubic feet behind the third row to 82.1 to 83.9 cubic feet with all seats folded down. A 3.5-liter V6 developing 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque is now mated exclusively to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Smooth and powerful enough, this V6 tows up to 5,000 pounds (with all-wheel drive). Fuel economy is pretty good with combined EPA ratings of 23 mpg (FWD) and 22 mpg (AWD).
The Pilot is capable and comfortable but not particularly sporty, although handling is secured in part by the torque vectoring technology of the AWD system. Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control are standard. Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are available on all except the base LX. The base version also skips the 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which is standard elsewhere. Leather seats and a power tailgate are included with the EX-L. Captain’s seats become available at the Touring level, along with navigation, rear-seat entertainment and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The two top trims include all-wheel drive, ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
Passenger space; loading volume.
Advantages of the 2021 fence
A usable third row seat and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; 3 years free maintenance.
Benefits of the Honda rider 2021
Up to 7 or 8 seats; lower prices in all areas; reliability, and good resale.
The 2021 Honda Pilot is a great vehicle, but if you really need to carry eight (or seven) passengers in comfort and style, the Hyundai Palisade is a great bet. We also really like the 3 years of free maintenance.
